Last year, Lizzo's backup dancers accused Lizzo of sexual harassment and fostering a hostile work environment. The singer denied the accusations, calling them “false” and “too outrageous to address.” Now, after months of criticism, she has shared a statement on Instagram hinting that she may be quitting music.
“I'm tired of putting up with dragging everyone in my life and on the internet,” Lizzo wrote. “All I want is to make music, make people happy, and help the world be a little better than I found it. But I'm starting to feel like the world doesn't want me in it. I'm always against the lies that are told about me because of my influence and opinions… being the butt of the joke every time because of my looks. …My character is chosen by people who do not know me and do not respect my name.”
“I didn’t sign up for this shit — I quit,” she added.
The letter comes nearly two months after a judge denied Lizzo's request to dismiss lawsuits filed by three of her former dancers.
Earlier this month, Lizzo posted a message telling fans that she “writes some of the best music and I'm so excited to hear it. I'm about to be a normal human being again… to be out there… to love and trust people… to try Making new friends… To sing and talk about my pain and my joy. Just give me a little time. Thank you for your patience, and to those who unfollowed me, thank you too, because now I know where we stand.
