SEATTLE — Nowruz, celebrated by 350 million people around the world and marking the beginning of the spring equinox, is here, and many locals are keeping the tradition alive.
“Especially living in Seattle, we've been through a few months of darkness and torrential rain, so it's definitely a positive feeling, a good feeling, to be experiencing this renewal. Personally, as a member of the Iranian diaspora community, I find a connection to my roots and my ancestors, through traditions like this.” That transcends borders, transcends time, and continues to communicate between us,” said Board Member Daniel Lotfy.
Kathia and Daniel believe the message of Nowruz is what resonates with so many people, and this year there will be a celebration at Seattle City Hall bringing hundreds of people from different cultures together.
One ancient tradition is haftsin, something you will find in every home to celebrate the New Year. There are 7 elements starting with the letter “S”, each symbolic element with a meaning behind it.
“We're really excited that we've been able to break down the boundaries between all of these communities and bring everyone together under a tradition that we all adhere to,” said SISCA Board Chair Katja Geller.
“I believe that the moment of the vernal equinox, and the moment of Nowruz when spring begins, I believe that the distance between me and my homeland is minimal. I feel closest because it is a reminder of ancient traditions dating back thousands of years that still connect us,” Lutfi said.
With so many customs and traditions, CSKA organizers hope that more people will be able to participate in Nowruz.
“We have decided to expand to include all the other celebrating communities that call Seattle home, so Afghans, Uzbeks from Uzbekistan, and Turks will join us, and there will be dancing, a fashion show of ethnic costumes, activities for kids, and tables to visit an art gallery,” Geller said.
Head to Seattle City Hall this Sunday from 12pm-5pm for your chance to take part in this thousands of year old tradition.
