John Grant has announced a new album titled The art of lying. Follow the former Caesars member for 2021 Boy from Michigan It is scheduled to release on June 14 via Bella Union. Alongside the announcement, he unveiled the new single “It's a Bitch,” which you can hear below.
“It's been a blast creating this song about just having fun with the lyrics, the synths, the psychedelic beats and the bass lines and also making fun of post-coronavirus malaise,” Grant said of “It's a Bitch” in a statement. “Plus, people have to think about what 'hesher' is. I loved going to an arcade in the 1980s and watching enthusiastic smokers on the court while playing Tempest, Stargate, Robotron, and Asteroids, and while blasting Iron Maiden and Rush on their Walkmans.
Grant making The art of lying With producer Ivor Guest. Featuring contributions from The Invisible's Dave Okumu, Robin Mullarkey, Seb Rochford, and Rachel Sermanni. “We often could only work for two weeks at a time, and it was very intense,” Grant recalls. “Ivor has assembled a team of amazing musicians. Dave Okumu [from The Invisible] He's an incredible guitar player. He came into the room when we were playing the demo of “Father” and immediately started doing what you hear on the recording. Robin Mullarkey played the stress-free bass and blew my mind, and the very talented Seb Rochford played the drum details. “There were so many magical moments from everyone.”
“The first time I heard 'Time It's Time', the last song Spring color By Naqash Naqash. Or “Night of the Swallow” by Kate Bush the dream; Or some Siberian gin material Spotless sky Or anything by the Cocteau Twins or Dead Can Dance; “Those were important moments for me in music,” Grant added. “And of course there's a little bit of the Devo spirit in everything I do in one way or another. There's a lot of amazing humor in their music but they were also as serious as a heart attack. I think that's one of the important themes in my life; it's about moments and being able to recognize them and be in them as they happen.” Despite everything that's going on. It's sitting in a taxi, which is the most natural situation in the world and seeing the grandeur and the sheer weight and majesty of a big city passing by, and you stare in awe. The absurdity of the world outside juxtaposed with the world happening inside. That amazes me. , the ability to capture what it truly feels like to be human.
The album title refers to Trump's book, The art of making dealswhich Grant said “is now viewed by MAGA disciples as just another book of the Bible and Trump himself a heaven-sent messiah. Because God wants you to be rich.” He explained:
This album is partly about the lies people embrace and the brokenness it generates and how these lies distort and distort us. For example, the Christian Nationalist movement has formed an alliance with white supremacist groups and together they control the Republican Party. They see gay and non-white people as genetically and even mentally inferior and believe that all undesirables should be forced to either convert to Christianity. and adhere to the teachings of the Bible as they interpreted them or else they must be removed until purity is restored to their nation. They now believe that democracy is not the way to achieve these goals. Any kind of pretense of tolerance that seemed to develop over the past several decades has all but disappeared. It feels like the United States is in free fall.
