A new mural celebrating young people's passion for cars has been given the green light.
The artwork by street artist Muhammad Ali will be painted at the Connaught Rooms location in Manningham Lane, Bradford.
The “culturally enriching” mural will contain a bright image of cars.
It will also help promote the Fueling Futures campaign, which aims to use young people's passion for Bradford cars to enhance their skills.
The plans were approved by Bradford Council at a meeting on Thursday, although it is not known when work will begin.
“Visually attractive”
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the application was submitted by arts group The Leap, which said it “wants to take young people in Bradford’s passion for cars and car culture and channel it towards an educational outcome”.
They said they hoped the mural would provide an “attractive and culturally enriching alternative” to the “illegal” advertisements previously installed on the site.
The Grade II listed building is currently an events venue, but was originally built as a Masonic hall.
Mr. Ali has been described as “a street artist who uses his art to empower communities, often celebrating community stories around faith and immigration.”
The mural will be painted on plywood panels and mounted to the wall rather than directly onto the stonework to minimize damage to the fabric of the building, planning officials said.
They added that it will not be lit to help preserve the character of the building.
No objection has been raised to the proposed mural, although one of the conditions for its approval is that it can only remain in place for five years.
