SAN ANTONIO, Texas, and LOS ANGELES, CA, March 16, 2024 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Haitham Abdul Razzaq was born in Iraq in 1974, and was 6 years old when war broke out between his country and Iran. Any childhood innocence or illusion of security was shattered when his father disappeared and was presumed dead. Eight years of war, followed by the harsh sanctions imposed on Iraq after the First Gulf War, increased the hardships suffered by his family and fellow Iraqis. “A common and fundamental principle is crucial to people’s well-being and prosperity, as well as protecting their dignity, differences and capabilities,” Abdul Razzaq said in an interview with United for Human Rights. “This principle is to believe in human rights, embrace them and apply them to improve the world.”
Abdul Razzaq immigrated to America in 2005 and set his sights on what he could do to help create a society based on human rights. He graduated from Texas State University, receiving a master's degree in sociology and a doctorate. in Culture, Literacy, and Language from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He works as a sociology professor and student advisor at Northwest Vista College in San Antonio.
One challenge he faces is that his students take human rights for granted. Some are oblivious to human rights violations. Therefore, it identifies human rights violations, whether hidden or serious, to convey to them the importance of protecting their rights and the rights of others.
He finds that United for Human Rights (UHR) teaching materials help his students make a personal connection with the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These rights are no longer just words on a page. They become living concepts with a tangible impact on the quality of life.
