Ariana Grande has pleaded with her fans to stop sending “hate messages” to “people out there”. [her] life” after releasing her new album “Eternal Sunshine” on Friday.
On Saturday, the star posted an Instagram story addressed to her fans.
“I just wanted to say that anyone sending hate messages to people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is doing the exact opposite of what I would ever encourage,” Grande wrote.
“I ask you not to do this,” Grande wrote. “It's not about how you support me. It's the opposite.”
Grande divorced her husband, Dalton Gomez, after a two-year relationship last year. A source confirmed to “Today” that she began dating her “Wicked” co-star, Ethan Slater, months before the divorce was finalized. The source also said that Slater broke up with his wife when he started dating Grande.
Grande's new album is named after the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, starring Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey, and like the film, appears to be about the breakdown of a relationship. Many believe that the songs on the album refer to her divorce from Gomez and her relationship with Slater.
The title track talks about a failed relationship with a liar and cheater.
Grande sings: “Now it's like I'm looking in the mirror. I hope you feel good when you're in it. I found a good boy and he's by my side. You're just eternal sunshine, sunshine.”
