Scarlett Johansson mimics the GOP's reaction to Sen. Katie Britt's State of the Union in an SNL cold open

Scarlett Johansson mocked Sen. Katie Britt during “Saturday Night Live” this week, in a parody of Republicans' response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address.

In a speech Thursday night from her kitchen, the real-life Britt blasted Biden over a border crisis she said he “invited” and a country she said is more dangerous than it was four years ago.

In a dark turn, Britt appeared to blame Biden for the death of Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student who the president said, in an unscripted moment, was killed by an “unlawful person.” She also told a story about a victim of human trafficking, which she implied happened during Biden's term — a story for which she received criticism.

Johansson mocked the senator's reaction to Biden's speech, saying that, like Britt, she was auditioning for the role of “creepy mom.”

“And I will be performing an original monologue called ‘This Country Is Hell,’” Johansson said. The actress added that she is worried about “the future of our children.”

“That's why I invited you into this strange, empty kitchen. Because Republicans wanted me to appeal to female voters, and women love the kitchen,” Johansson said to laughter from the audience.

Johansson, as Britt, described Biden's speech as a “permanent political performance,” adding with dramatic brilliance that she “is not performing any performance.”

Referring to Britt's story about a human trafficking victim, Johansson said she would “pivot from scratch into a shocking, violent story about sex trafficking.”

“Rest assured, all the details about the incident are real, except for the year it happened, and who was the president when it happened,” Johansson said.

Shortly after Britt's speech on Thursday, journalist Jonathan Katz, in a social media post, focused on the story more closely and noted that human trafficking did not occur during the Biden presidency, or even in the United States; It happened during the administration of President George W. Bush in Mexico.

Johansson then said she was making the video not only to respond to Biden's State of the Union address, but also to sell cross necklaces for QVC.

“This Affinity Diamond necklace goes with anything, and you can wear it from church to the club,” Johansson said.

The actor continued, saying: “The American dream has turned into a nightmare.”

Finally, Johansson recreated a scene from “Get Out” in which white actress Catherine Keener scrapes a spoon on her teacup to hypnotize a black character played by Daniel Kaluuya. “SNL” cast member Kenan Thompson portrays Kaluuya in the scene, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and staring wide-eyed at the camera, a tear streaming down his face.

But for the American people who are struggling now, let them know this. We heard you. We see you. “We smell you,” the actor said. “We're inside your kitchen now, looking through your refrigerator. And what's that on the top shelf? Immigrants.”

Britt responded to criticism of her speech on Fox News Sunday, where she did not admit to making any mistake or leaving the wrong impression.

She was asked if she meant to give the impression that the story she told about a human trafficking victim occurred during Biden's term.

“No,” Britt replied, later adding: “I said very clearly that I spoke to a woman who told me when she was trafficked when she was 12 years old, so I didn't say she was a teenager. I didn't say a young woman, or a mature woman, or A woman when she was trafficked when she was 12 years old.”

She doubled down on her statement Thursday that Biden “did not just cause this border crisis. He called it 94 executive actions in his first 100 days.

The White House responded to the Republican senator, accusing Brett of relying on “blatant lies” to attack Biden.

“Instead of telling more blatant lies to justify opposition to the strongest bipartisan border legislation in modern history, Senator Britt should stop choosing human smugglers and fentanyl traffickers over our national security and the Border Patrol,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement. “. statement. “As President Biden said in his State of the Union address, we have a simple choice: Either we fight to fix the border or we can fix it.”

Britt's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment from NBC News.
