We thank Mr. Eric J. Brooks for his feedback on PUB's plan to build a pilot plant with Equatic and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to explore the removal of carbon dioxide from seawater (the amount of carbon dioxide that would be removed by the $27 million facility is just a drop in the ocean , March 5).

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has estimated that removing carbon dioxide will be a major contributor to limiting global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, and offsetting emissions from sectors that are difficult to decarbonize.

The pilot-scale plant is essential to enable PUB and our partners to evaluate the potential of ocean CO2 removal technology for Singapore and beyond.

If this technology proves feasible on a commercial scale, a single plant could potentially remove up to 110,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year โ€” the equivalent of the annual carbon emissions of more than 25,000 people โ€” and in the process produce hydrogen, a fuel clean. source. This project is also part of the government's wider decarbonisation efforts.

PUB is committed to investing in R&D and sourcing for best-in-class solutions to achieve our goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045, thereby contributing to Singapore's net zero carbon emissions targets.

The investment will also be crucial in ensuring Singapore's water supply remains climate resilient and sustainable.

    Chief Engineering and Technology Officer
