Sampha teamed up with xx's Romy for a cover of André 3000's 2018 song “Me & My (To Bury Your Parents)”. The recording was featured on the latest release of Sampha's Apple Music 1 Wave therapyWhich subscribers can listen to here.
Sampha shared the following statement about the collaboration:
I've known Romy for a while and she's someone I can talk to about certain things and we've been through similar things and experiences, she lost her parents and so have I, and I think she was someone I talked about. Things and I think she wanted to talk to someone who did that and I think we kind of had that conversation out in the open. You know why I called my album “The Process” because sometimes it's good to externalize things and create a dialogue and you might find yourself somewhere more enlightened or even sometimes it's good to have someone to empathize with or to empathize with. .
In the studio session, we did a cover of Andre 3000's song “Me & My (To Bury Your Parents)” and yeah, that song really affected me because I wrote my own song called “(Nobody Knows Me) Like a Piano” which was about my mother and I kind of felt… “I wouldn't say I'm guilty but I wondered, you know, when releasing and writing a song that was very personal to me. But at the time I couldn't really think about anything else, that was just what was coming out of me. Hearing one of my favorite musicians reflect as well In his feelings of loss and how this relationship with your parents can make me feel (sort of) heard and able to express myself in this way. Not everyone necessarily does that, but that's how I felt like processing some of my grief, and I feel like Romy was In a similar setting, so it was a special song to cover together.
Samfa's latest album, for any, released in October. Also last year, Romy released her first solo album, Mid air.
