“We hope that Akira Toriyama's unique creative world will remain loved by everyone for a long time to come,” she added.

His family and very few friends attended his funeral, the statement said, adding that he was working on other projects when he died.

Dragon Ball first appeared in the Weekly Shonen Jump comic magazine in 1984 and has subsequently been adapted into films, video games, and television series, which have been distributed in over 80 countries.

It has sold 260 million copies worldwide, according to the studio.

The story revolves around a boy named Son Goku, who possesses a monkey tail and immense strength, and his quest to collect magical dragon balls to defend Earth against aliens called Saiyans.

For many fans, Son Goku's journey from a child stumbling through martial arts training to a high-flying hero who can fire electric bolts from his hands reminds them of their struggles against self-doubt when they reached adulthood, the BBC said. .
