Students dress up in their best fashions for a special night out that only happens once every spring semester.
On February 29, the Multicultural Center hosted the Heritage Gala in the Adante Student Center Ballroom. The theme of the event was the Met Gala.
Biological Anthropology sophomore Christian Marroquin made his clothing by hand.
“I bought the jacket, pants and shirt from Goodwill. Then, I went to JoAnn's and made the arm sleeves,” Marroquin said. “I made my way into it, and I had gold chains around my house and simply used them.”
Education major Danica Smith, a sophomore, attended the party with friends. Smith described what she decided to wear to the event.
“Black dress, backless, and cute heels,” Smith said.
Communications major Alani Brown Jones, a sophomore, dresses up for a party with his friends.
“I'm wearing a beautiful black lace dress and black high-heeled shoes,” Brown-Jones said.
Once students entered the hallway outside the hall, they were greeted with a red carpet and a photo backdrop where they could take photos.
Before entering the event, students had to contact the staff at the table to ensure they had RSVPed or paid for any remaining tickets.
“For me, I went to the semester last spring, and I really enjoyed it,” Marroquin said.
The Heritage Ball started at 7pm and finished around 1am
There were police officers patrolling the event throughout the night to ensure the safety of the students.
Officer Chris Sink attended his first Heritage Ball event.
“We're just here to provide public safety because of the number of people that will be here tonight,” Sink said.
The officer joining Sink was Officer Tom Glaso.
“I've worked on the ceremonial ball in the past. I think it's a great opportunity because we have a diverse university,” Glaso said.
There was a dance floor in the middle of the room and several tables around the room.
The event included a large number of drinks and foods such as jerk chicken and yellow rice.
“You get to meet people from all different walks of life, and all the different foods that are served are so great,” Glaso said.
The Caribbean Students Association dance team entertained the crowd by performing a group dance.
There was also Tai Kwon Act as performers jump high into the air to kick and break wood planks.
Audience members were engaged in both acts.
“What the university does is assign police officers to provide public safety, and just make sure everyone has a safe environment to enjoy the night,” Glaso said.
During the ceremony, some of the participating students across the campus were awarded certificates in recognition of their hard work.
By the end of the night, all the students were on the dance floor as the DJ played energetic music.
“I expect to see people celebrating what they deserve and having a good time,” Brown-Jones said.
