Now is the time to get ready for the weekend! Thursday is a first alert day for weather impacts with the potential for widespread rain and isolated thunderstorms. Scattered heavy showers will fall early Thursday morning during the drive and bus station and become more numerous and widespread by lunchtime. Rain will continue until Thursday afternoon and evening, with thunderstorms. Fortunately, the risk of severe thunderstorms is very low. Scattered light rain is expected to continue Thursday night into Friday morning before ending Friday afternoon. This rain will be heavy countywide with rainfall totals ranging from 0.5 inches to 2.0 inches. This precipitation will help alleviate abnormal to moderate drought conditions across parts of eastern Kansas and western Missouri, as well as bring much-needed moisture to farmland and pastures. Before this week's storms, there is an important anniversary. Today, March 6, marks seven years since the 2017 tornado outbreak. It's also time for statewide severe weather tornado drills in Missouri and Kansas. NOAA outdoor sirens and weather radios will activate at 11 a.m. to signal the start of the drill. Take this time to review where you will take refuge during an actual tornado warning!
