Daytona Beach, a name synonymous with NASCAR, may soon share the spotlight with motocross as Volusia County officials consider creating a public motocross facility. The initiative, led by Don Dempsey, Volusia County Councilman District 1, aims to fill a three-decade void in the local sports and entertainment scene. A feasibility study conducted by Hunden Strategic Partners revealed promising prospects for such a facility, which could significantly boost tourism and the local economy.

    Feasibility study reveals potential

The study proposes a facility that includes two full-size motocross tracks, more than 50 recreational vehicle slips, ample parking, and basic amenities such as concession stands and bathrooms. Located off Tomoka Farms Road, this project is not only about providing a place for motocross enthusiasts but also creating a comprehensive entertainment hub. The projected operating model indicates that the facility could host about 130 training days and 12 major events annually, attracting tens of thousands of visitors and generating significant economic activity.

    Consider public-private partnerships

While the county council has not yet made a decision on starting the project, options include operating the facility independently or entering into a public-private partnership. The decision-making process is still in its early stages, but the potential benefits demonstrated in the feasibility study indicate a promising future for the project. With an estimated construction cost of $10.2 million, the facility's profitability and economic impact are subject to careful consideration, balancing initial expenditures with long-term gains.

    Economic and societal impact

It is expected that the motocross facility will not only provide a new sporting venue, but will also stimulate the local economy through increased tourism, retail and dining activities. The county-operated facility could see a positive net operating income turnaround by its fifth year, demonstrating the feasibility of the project and its potential to contribute to the county's economic development. As discussions and planning continue, the community awaits the County Council's decision on this ambitious project that could redefine the entertainment and economic landscape of Volusia County.
