The Irish president will remain in hospital over the weekend after being admitted yesterday.

It is believed that a discussion about the president's discharge took place today, before a decision was made to keep him in the hospital.
A statement said: “President Michael D Higgins thanked the public for the outpouring of well-wishes he has received since his admission to St James's Hospital yesterday evening, and would like to express his deep appreciation to all those who have sent messages to him.” And also to the medical staff for their continuous care.
He added: “After the tests conducted after his admission to the hospital, the president will remain in the hospital over the weekend in order to monitor his blood pressure.”
The statement said that Higgins is expected to return to his official residence in Arras-en-Ouachtarain early next week.
A medical team visited the president at his home, where no immediate concerns were identified.
Tests were conducted on him in the hospital, and the initial results were said to be “positive.”
In an earlier statement issued Thursday, Higgins' spokesman said he was in “excellent spirits” at the hospital.
“Aras an Uachtarrain can confirm that after feeling unwell, President Michael D Higgins was this evening transferred to hospital for precautionary tests,” the statement read.
“The President's condition was initially assessed at Aras an Uachtarain where no immediate concerns were identified but the decision was made to go to hospital in order to undergo tests, the initial results of which were positive.
He added, “The president, who will remain in the hospital overnight, is in excellent spirits and thanked the medical staff for the care he received.”
