In Old French, “reverdie” (pronounced re-ver-die) means “to re-green.” It is a type of song or poetry dating back to at least the Middle Ages that celebrates or welcomes the arrival of spring.
A famous example of riffrade is Chaucer's public introduction to The Canterbury Tales (read it here). An ironic twist can be found in TS Eliot's novel The Waste Land, in its famous opening, “April is the cruelest month” (read it here).
