Recognizing Mardul Gayo as an indispensable element of Goa's culture: GFP | Goa News

PANAJI: The Forward Goa Party (GFP) has urged the state government to recognize 'Mardul Gayo' as an 'irreplaceable cultural heritage' and provide financial assistance to the 'Naik Phulkar Samaj'. Educational initiatives are required to raise awareness about the tradition of 'Jayanchi Puja' which is facing oblivion and may be abandoned by the future generation, GFP president Vijay Sardesai said.

Sardesai asked the government to consider including Goan traditions in the state's educational curriculum so that awareness is created among the younger generation.

“I have strong concerns about the future of this tradition. With the rapid modernization and urbanization of our country, such cultural practices are at risk of being forgotten or abandoned,” Sardesai said.

The Naik Phulkar Samaj performed an annual 'Gyanchi Puja', a tradition brought about by the plague of 1914. Villagers prayed for Devi Mahalasa Narayani's recovery through 'Gyanchi Puja', a ritual they believe brought an end to the plague.

“I propose setting up a committee to oversee the preservation of this and other similar traditions in Goa. This committee can work together with local communities, cultural experts and historians,” Sardesai said.
