Oregon-based singer-songwriter Anna Tevel has announced a new album titled A living thing. Follow up until 2022 Strangers It is scheduled to be released on May 31 via Fluff & Gravy Records. Watch a video for lead single “Disposable Camera” below.
A living thing It was recorded in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in collaboration with producer Shane Leonard. “I wrote frantically amidst the strange chaos of that year, suddenly out of work and trying to understand the changing fabric of humanity, the depth of despair and soul-crushing perseverance,” Tevel explained in a statement. “The resulting songs sounded rhythmic and energetic, with more melody and soaring choruses than I had explored in the past. There was no way and no way to assemble a full band, and I brought the songs to Shane's doorstep knowing and completely trusting the skill and liveliness of his creative imagination. Shane stripped it all down Even the Buttons and we rebuilt it together, just the two of us, for a month in his garage studio, Shane dreaming up every vocal layer while I chased the words down to a final double chorus.
“Shane gave his beautiful heart and mind to this record and I have never had such a powerful, liberating collaborative experience,” Tevel added. “I learned a lot from watching him explore in the studio. We followed the rules of improvisation, agreed, and experimented with every idea that came to fruition — we sampled an 8-track backing symphony, twisted wine glasses and lighters, read poetry into Lovie's microphones, and recorded a thunderstorm into an instrument.” Tape. Shane went on eternal drum beat quests, chasing complex melodic bass lines, gently encouraging me to let go and sing from a deeper place. I love this recording because it feels like a joyful musical conversation with a close friend about the great mystery of being alive.
