California Gov. Gavin Newsom laughed after a Fox News reporter asked if Joe Biden has a better chance of beating former President Donald Trump than he does.
Newsom has long been rumored to be running a shadow campaign, aiming to step in and replace Biden at the last minute.
“The special counsel’s report released last week against President Biden. He was, quote, a sympathetic, well-meaning old man with a poor memory. What do you think about this?” the reporter began.
The reporter continued: “And then also for the 2024 elections…Does 81-year-old President Biden have a better chance of beating Donald Trump than you do? Do you disagree with the 86% of Americans who believe he is too old to run?
The question prompted a round of laughter from Newsom and members of his administration.
“Well, I appreciate the question in the frame, but I also appreciate my president and his performance,” Newsom began.
“I'm a little old-fashioned. I care about results,” the governor said. “I care about governance. I care about the people who deliver. I care about people's records, and what President Biden has accomplished in just three years is the most important list of accomplishments in my life.
“And I don’t say that lightly,” Newsom continued. I say that knowingly, because we are literally here as beneficiaries of those achievements. The Homekey logo is inspired by the partnerships we have formed with this administration. Remarkable investments in the Infrastructure Bill, Remarkable Investments in Chips and Science Act, Remarkable and unprecedented investments across the breadth including the Safer Communities Act and new investments in mental health and gun safety.
The heaps of praise did not stop there.
“The work he's done to eliminate that, for many, burdened with student loans, I could go on and on. The work he's done in terms of managing his alliance. NATO is stronger and it's bigger than it was before. Russia is weaker than it was before,” Newsom said. “The work that he has done in terms of strengthening our alliances, including perhaps, some of the most important partnerships as they relate, partnerships now and new strategic alliances with Japan and South Korea in relation to what is happening around the world.”
Finally, the governor concluded, “So I'm very proud of this president, and I'm very excited to be there on the campaign trail for him. When asked, the answer is yes. And I say that with enthusiasm, no matter how long the life is. And I'm very, very proud to be a Democrat and proud to support His re-election.”
