Self-immolation is commonly used as an extreme act of protest and has occurred several times in the capital.
On Earth Day 2022, April 22, climate activist Wayne Allan Bruce set himself on fire outside the Supreme Court building. He died of his wounds.
In 2017, an anti-Trump protester set himself on fire outside what was then the Trump Hotel. He was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening burns.
