“Three” is a strange meditation on “Chekhov's Three Sisters” as seen through the strangely American perspective of four soul-searching siblings and their extended families in the United States.

THREE offers a snapshot of the Prozorov family and their loved ones on four different days in four different eras in a fictional military base town in the far north of the upper Midwest. Although the entire play covers just over 5 years of their lives, each act is set in one of four distinct eras: 1946, 1982, 1995 and the present.

“I wanted the audience to see themselves in the characters in a direct way,” playwright Nick Salamon said. “I made an effort to adapt Chekhov's characters with attention to the diversity of gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity that I hope our audience reflects. I wanted to set the adaptation in the world of the last century of American life in a way that is meaningful and resonant, which is why I chose to set the four seasons in four different eras of life in This Country: The end of World War II in 1946, the AIDS/Reagan era in 1982, the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, and today in a world still feeling the effects of the Covid pandemic. I have tried hard to find analogues for the different intentions of Chekhov's characters and the obstacles and conflicts that exist between them that would To root my characters in these American historical touchstones.
