But the fighting has intensified, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, which has been tracking such incidents throughout the war. The organization recorded 9,700 battle incidents – armed clashes, seizing or reclaiming territory – in the second year of the war, an increase of 32 percent compared to the first year. It said the increase was mainly due to increased fighting in the Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions, both of which Ukraine focused on in its failed counteroffensive.
The organization made 22 territorial gains for Ukraine and 31 for Russia last year, compared to a total of 600 gains in the first year of fighting.
The second anniversary of the war comes at a critical time, as the fighting has turned into a battle of attrition, and Western-supplied ammunition in Kiev may run out as aid stops.
“When you start running out of artillery, you need more troops,” said Max Bergmann, director of the Europe, Russia and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “You start putting more guys on the front lines and then you start losing those guys.”

Russia built heavy fortifications, including barbed wire and trenches, strengthening the front line.
It's one of the reasons why Ukrainian forces tried and failed to make headway during the summer counteroffensive.
In the third year of the war, Ukraine will focus on rebuilding its infantry forces and replenishing ammunition stocks with the aim of “possibly going on the offensive in 2025,” Bergman said. But that may be difficult to achieve as the West's willingness to send more aid to the country diminishes.
Moscow has already made gradual gains this year, seizing the eastern city of Avdiivka in mid-February.
“Ukraine has not hardened its line as much [in the second year] Because he was hoping for a breakthrough.” Russia is now, after a year, focusing on fortifications, Bergman said He seems to be pushing for more land.
