There will be a lot of eyes on Justin Madubuike's free agency this offseason. The 26-year-old defensive tackle is coming off a season in which he had 13 sacks and 12 tackles for loss.
If he continues on this path after his breakout season, Madubuike could become one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history. It goes without saying that the Ravens would like to keep him, but it won't be easy if he hits the open market.
Which teams want Justin Madubuike this season?
Baltimore has the option to use the franchise tag on him, ensuring he will play for the Ravens in 2024. Signing him to a long-term extension would do the same as well.
But if none of those things happen, Madubuike will be among the most sought-after free agents in the NFL this offseason. Assuming that's the case, let's take a closer look at Justin Madubuike's free agency and which teams will be his biggest competition.
Bengals
Heading into the offseason, the Bengals are among the leaders in terms of teams with cap space and money to spend. There's also no doubt that Cincinnati would love to poach a star player from one of its biggest rivals.
The Bengals are set to lose DJ Reader in free agency, so there's an opportunity for their defense to land a defensive tackle. Madubuike would certainly be an upgrade over Reader, which is why this move would be a win for Cincinnati in every way possible.
the black
After your trip to the NFC Championship Game is over and with plenty of money to spend, look for the Lions to be active in free agency. Detroit's offense is solid right now, but the defense has room for improvement. Adding a Pro Bowler like Madubuike would give Detroit's defense a big boost.
The Lions certainly already have a lot of talent on their defensive line after using several early round picks at those positions in recent years. But Dan Campbell knows there's no such thing as being too tough in the trenches. With the addition of Madubuike to a group that also includes Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions likely have one of the best defensive lines in football, which would be worth investing in a free agent like Madubuike.
Texas
The Texans are in an interesting position this season. They have made big strides in 2023 but have six defensive players about to hit free agency. This gives them multiple holes to fill this season. However, there's no denying the appeal of adding a player like Madubuike, especially with Sheldon Rankins set to become a free agent.
Houston believes Will Anderson Jr. will become an elite pass rusher in the coming years. Putting a player like Madubuike on the defensive line alongside him would help Anderson and lay a strong foundation for Houston's defense heading into 2024.
Jaguar
Before the Jaguars do anything in free agency, they need to figure out whether keeping star edge rusher Josh Allen is available. But if Jacksonville loses Allen, don't be surprised if the Jags turn around and go after Madubuike.
The two don't play the same position, though Madubuike will bolster Jacksonville's defensive line and help the outside forwards Jacksonville brings in to replace Allen.
Seahawks
With former defensive coordinator Mike McDonald hired as Seattle's new head coach, the Seahawks became a viable option for Madobuike. It was McDonald's scheme that helped bring out the best in Madubuike last season, so it's clear the two have a comfort level with each other.
Of course, that wouldn't be the only factor considering Madubuike as a free agent. However, it should be noted that the Seahawks have little money to play for this season. If McDonald believes Madubuike can be an important part of Seattle's defense, the Seahawks could end up making a strong effort to sign him.
