The city of Chicago is now suing oil companies over climate change.
A cynical person might see this as nothing more than a cash-strapped city pursuing what it perceives to be a deep target in order to obtain the large sums of money it needs in order to keep the city afloat.
Chicago's financial problems were well known long before the city became a destination for illegal border crossers.

Chicago sues oil companies over climate change impacts
The city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against six major oil companies and a major fossil fuel lobby group on Tuesday, alleging they funded and planned a climate change denial campaign that directly affects city residents.
In the lawsuit, the city accused BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Phillips 66, Shell and the American Petroleum Institute (API) of misleading the public about the impact of their products and contributing to climate change impacts on Chicago. .
These impacts include unsafe summer temperatures, increased severe weather, beach erosion, and exposure to disasters such as flash floods in basements on the city's west side, according to the lawsuit. As a result, the city says, climate change mitigation and response projects in low-income communities have cost it nearly $200 million.
The complaint also singles out API with accusations that it created front groups to “promote climate misinformation and advocacy from a purportedly objective source.” The accusation echoes statements ExxonMobil lobbyist Keith McCoy made to an activist in 2021 while secretly recorded that the company was “aggressively exercising [fought] Against some climate-related science. Exxon denied responsibility for McCoy's comments and said they did not represent the company's views.
