Two men accused of Super Bowl murders

The 22 injured range in age from 8 to 47 years old, according to Police Chief Stacey Graves. Lisa Lopez Galván, a mother of two and host of “Taste of Tejano,” was murdered.

The shooting incident was the latest in a sporting celebration in the United States. A shooting injured several people last year in Denver after the NBA championship.

That has Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas wondering if it's time to rethink championship celebrations, even as he promised last week that the city would continue to celebrate its victories. Next month's St. Patrick's Day parade will go ahead as scheduled, Lucas said.

The Kansas City shooting occurred in a state with few gun laws and a city plagued by gun violence. In 2020, Kansas City was among nine cities selected by the US Department of Justice in an effort to eliminate violent crime. In 2023, the city tied its record with 182 homicides, most involving firearms.

The Republican-led Missouri House of Representatives on Monday approved, on a bipartisan vote, a ban on celebratory gunfire in cities after a debate that ranged from tears to anger. A similar measure passed last year as part of a comprehensive crime bill, but Republican Gov. Mike Parson vetoed the legislation. He pointed to problems with other crimes provisions in the bill that are not related to celebratory shooting.
