Women's Indigenous vs. Maori All Stars match; Aboriginals win 26-4 in difficult circumstances

The Indigenous All Stars recorded their first win in the women's game, defeating the Maori All Stars 26-4 at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.

The continuous rain did not affect the morale of the players, but it affected ball handling throughout the match, as both teams suffered from constant pressure.

The Indigenous team still found a way to shine through the dismal conditions with Kyra Dibb guiding the team around the park and scoring doubles for Jamie Chapman and Kimberley Hunt.

Deb scored an excellent 40/30 early in the game to put her team in great field position and they scored the next set when Tamika Upton took the ball to the goal line and set up a late goal for Shaylee Bent.

Chapman doubled the Indigenous lead shortly after half-time when she took advantage of a tiring defence, drove into the backfield and around the full-back to score and the game was one-way traffic from that point on.

The Maori Women controlled their field position for most of the second half but could not penetrate the defensive goal line wall. Jasmine Strange finally managed to put the Maori team ahead in the final quarter, but it was too late for the New Zealand team.

    Great start

Canberra Raiders forward Grace Kemp made an immediate impact when she took the field for her All Stars debut just before quarter time, creating momentum which the Indigenous All Stars used to open the scoring.

Kemp added a much-needed progression to the set and didn't shy away from the tough squares, putting her hand to bear for every combination she could.

Nearly half of the 22-year-old prop's counters came after contact (40 of 92) and Kemp broke five tackles in her 32 minutes on the pitch.

    Julie Jade Chapman

Chapman showcased her speed with two long-distance attempts, eating up meters to finish 214 metres.

The Gold Coast Titans center had limited touches but made the most of the opportunities she was given and once she broke the line no one could beat her.

Chapman also led the game in tackle breaks (7) and line breaks (2).
