Imprisoned Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has died, the prison service in the region where he was serving his sentence announced.

The anti-corruption campaigner, once described as the man “President Putin fears most”, has been in prison since 2021 on charges widely seen as politically motivated.

The 47-year-old survived poisoning attempts and years in some of Russia's most notorious prisons, after his group exposed corruption at almost every level of the Russian state.

Watch some of the most dramatic moments of his career.
