2007 – Due to his clever use of social media in the form of a blog, Alexei Navalny gained fame by documenting his investments in state-owned oil companies, searching for evidence of corruption.

Shortly after, he was expelled from the liberal opposition party Yabloko for participating in “nationalist activities.”

December 2011- Alexei's anti-corruption foundation has amassed a large following to expose the fortunes of Kremlin elites. Later that year, he became a major leader of the election protest after Putin's United Russia party won the election even though the Kremlin's campaign was marred by allegations of fraud.

July 2013 – Navalny was arrested for embezzlement. The Russian government accused him of fraud amounting to 16 million rubles ($500,000). He denies these accusations.

September 2013 – In his bid to become mayor of Moscow, Navalny finished second with strong support from Kremlin-backed Sergei Sobyanin.

December 2018 – Five years later, Navalny's presence continues to hamper Putin's ideal Russia as he bids for the presidency. However, Putin banned his candidacy, citing Navalny's conviction for embezzlement. Despite Navalny urging Russians to boycott the vote, Putin continues to win a fourth term.

August 2020 – Navalny was hospitalized in Siberia and placed in a medically induced coma after losing consciousness during the flight. Tests showed that he had been poisoned with Novichok, a nerve agent commonly used in the Soviet era. The Kremlin denies responsibility for the attack.

January 2021 Upon his return to Moscow, Navalny was detained at the airport. Thousands demonstrated across Russia to demand his release.

February 2021 – Alexei was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for violating the terms of the suspended sentence while recovering in Germany. He was sent to a penal colony.

August 2023 – Navalny's sentence was increased to nine years after he was found guilty of new charges of embezzlement and contempt of court. An additional 19 years were added in a “special regime” facility on charges of extremism.

December 2023 – After disappearing for two weeks, the opposition leader ends up in a penal colony in the Arctic North.

February 2024 – Alexei Navalny dies in prison.
