Deaton is considering entering the race as the cryptocurrency industry ramps up its aggressive efforts to influence the 2024 election. An industry-backed super PAC that has more than $80 million in the bank scored its first major success this week with a multi-million dollar ad buy attacking Democrat Katie Porter, one of Warren's protégés, is in the California Senate primary.
The pro-crypto Republican is vying to challenge Senate Banking Chairman Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) in a closely watched Ohio race that could determine the balance of power in the chamber.
Warren has positioned herself as one of the most prominent cryptocurrency skeptics in Congress, aggressively pushing legislation that would suppress the industry from her position on the Banking Committee. It frequently warns against fraud in cryptocurrency markets and has fought industry-backed legislation sought by House Republicans.
Deaton has challenged Warren's cryptocurrency views on X, formerly Twitter, and previously helped fight a lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission against Ripple Labs.
Deaton's resume goes beyond just defending cryptocurrencies. Deaton, a former U.S. Marine from the Detroit area, overcame a poor and violent childhood to graduate from law school and start his own firm representing asbestos victims. He is a cancer survivor and author of “Food Stamp Warrior.”
