A somewhat subjective assessment of today's weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

7/10: It's mainly sunny and not too cold, but the gusty breeze is harsh.

    • today: Partly sunny, windy. Highest: from 47 to 53.
    • Tonight: Mostly clear, winds active. Lowest: 31 to 37.
    • tomorrow: Sunny start, increasing clouds in the afternoon. Highest: from 41 to 47.

The only real excitement in this forecast comes Friday night when a fast-moving storm system will likely deliver some snow. It could be a great Saturday if it continues. Otherwise, it will be generally sunny and seasonally cool between now and Presidents Day.

today is Thursday): The sunshine can be filtered out by high clouds, but overall it's still not a bad day with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The wind from the south is a bit gusty, which detracts from the comfort factor. Confidence: high

Tonight: Breezes stay on the brisk side under clear skies. Check out the waxing moon floating above Jupiter in the evening sky. Lows drop into the low to mid 30s. Confidence: high

tomorrow Friday): Winds shift, coming from the north, pushing cold air and highs staying in the low to mid 40s. The mornings are mainly sunny, but clouds gradually increase in the afternoon as the next storm approaches from the west. Confidence: medium-high

Tomorrow night: A little rain is likely between 9pm and midnight, which could start out as rain but the air mass should quickly cool to snow. The snow should continue to fall until around dawn, with accumulations ranging from a layer to a few inches. Currently, it appears that areas west and north of downtown Washington will see higher amounts, but expectations may change. Minimum temperatures at night range between 27 and 33 degrees. Confidence: average

The snow should move away by sunrise Saturday The sky will gradually become clear. Whether there is light accumulation or not, highs should continue to be in the upper 30s to lower 40s as cold air settles in. Overnight lows drop into the 20s. Confidence: average

Sunday It's mainly sunny, but the cold air behind the storm is still with us. Highs reach the lows to mid 40s. Overnight lows range through the 20s. Confidence: medium-high

Sunlight dominates Monday The cold air begins to withdraw, allowing highs to climb into the upper 40s to lower 50s. Confidence: average

A daily assessment of the likelihood of at least one inch of snow falling in the coming week, on a scale of 0 to 10.

6/10 (↑): Snow is a good bet on Friday night. Once again, we are dealing with cool air and limited humidity which keeps the potential for accumulation somewhat under control.
