The stunning display results from particles from the Sun carried by the solar wind interacting with the Earth's atmosphere after being directed to the polar regions by the planet's magnetic field.
According to the Royal Greenwich Observatory, different gases give different effects, as the green color in the aurora is a feature of the interaction of solar molecules with oxygen, while purple, blue or pink colors are caused by nitrogen.
The dark red color can sometimes be seen as a result of the sun's molecules interacting with oxygen at very high altitudes.
