Iowa Weather: A warm start to the week with a winter breeze on the way โ and possibly rain and snow
In recent days, Laura, with all the spring weather we're having outside right now, it's still pretty nice by February standards here across the state. Blue skies here in the Des Moines metro. We're now showing you wind gusts across Iowa. We had 40 showings for you earlier for these temperatures. Most of us are only a few degrees cooler. When you get into a little bit of a northwest breeze, it feels like 42 at Waterloo, 37. Grinnell 38, Ames 39. Fort Dodge. But that's still not bad for this time of year. The standards are very nice. Sunshine borders the border across the state. There is now a larger climate system to our south. This provides some snow. In fact, you can see in parts of Missouri that there will be severe storms in the Deep South and toward the East Coast. But here in the Midwest things are pretty quiet. You may have just noticed a little breeze here over the past hour or two as a cold front drifted across the state, but there haven't been any major impacts from this weather, especially precipitation. We'll keep things mostly sunny as we go through the rest of the afternoon. Raise these temperatures a few more degrees and a little higher than normal. This time of year. Typically you're looking at highs around the low to mid 30s. It's been a long time since we had truly normal temperatures over three weeks. In reality. Now, we won't see any normal temperatures for the next couple of days either. Tomorrow is a lot like today, maybe just a few clouds for Tuesday. Wednesday will be more cloudy throughout the day, but our temperatures will also rise into the 50s. Usually that means something is about to happen, if we start to get more clouds and we're still warming up, so we'll take it hour by hour until Wednesday morning, skip the rest of the day, tomorrow will be dry. So, as we move forward through Wednesday, the clouds start to increase to the point where we just talked about that. But then, as we get closer to sunset on Wednesday, we'll probably start releasing some LT, and maybe a little bit of the wintry mix. And if you're in northern Iowa, let's say north of Interstate 30, you might end up with some snowflakes overnight. Thursday night until the early hours of Thursday morning, or, sorry, Wednesday night until the early hours of Thursday morning. It's going to be one of those systems that kind of takes shape as you come through Iowa. This makes forecasts a little more complicated. But I think overall it's going to be a little wet for most of us. Although if you're, let's say you're north of Interstate 30, especially Interstate 20, in the early morning hours of Thursday, you might wake up with a little bit of snow on the ground, but that will be gone by most of the time the U.S. is up and moving and moving. Thursday. Hopefully that will limit some of the impacts that you can see here where you can get those light blue colors farther north, especially northwest Iowa, where you can see some minor snow accumulations. Even if we had to predict some of the actual totals. We'll probably get you out of here in the next day or two. So it is not a major weather system. Once it disappears, the winds blow from the north and west. We begin to lower those temperatures Thursday into Friday. The second system gives us a chance this time for snow to fall again. The rain amounts don't look like much, but it will be a change from the current weather pattern. A few flakes either late Thursday night or the first half of Friday, and we'll settle into some other seasonable temperatures in the 30s to start the weekend. But it didn't last long. Again, we sta

There is a generally quiet start to our work week. We'll keep some clouds in the forecast tonight and tomorrow but we won't see much impact weather until the middle and end of the week. Interactive Radar | Weather Advisories Highs will be in the upper 40s to low 50s through Valentine's Day. Two weak systems will move through mid to late week bringing mainly rain on Valentine's Day with snow possible along the Minnesota border, then more widespread light snow late Thursday into early Friday. Snow amounts in northern Iowa near the Minnesota border could be close to an inch or diminish quickly as you head south. Snow amounts early Friday will be heaviest in southwest Iowa, but about an inch or less is likely. Des Moines may avoid the bulk of the snow from both systems as one passes too far north to bring in any cold air, keeping us largely as rain…and Friday's system passes too far to the southwest. There's still time for this to change, so we'll keep an eye on it, but the impacts on the metro at this point don't look too big.
