    To make fountain pens, you need a $10,000 machine and $0.6 in materials, electricity, and labor per pen. For 100 pens, total variable costs are $60, and for 10,000 pens, $6,000. This variable cost rises as more pens are made. The cost of the machine is set at $10,000, regardless of how many pens it produces, and does not factor into the profit per unit calculation.

    When making 10,000 pens, the total cost (fixed and variable) is $16,000, making the cost of one pen $1.6. Selling each pen at $2 results in a profit of $0.4 per pen.
