LUBBOCK, Texas (KLBK) – KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Reilly provides a Wednesday night weather update for February 7, 2024.
Tonight: a clear sky. Lowest 37 degrees. West winds 18 – 22 mph.
tomorrow: Sunny and breezy. High 64 degrees. Winds SW 18 – 22 mph.
Tonight:
Cold air is expected to creep into the southern plains region during the night. However, we will still be above average for this time of year. Lows will reach the 30s to mid 40s across the region, with western areas seeing the coldest temperatures. Our skies will become clearer as the sun rises on Thursday. Winds will remain brisk throughout the night, continuing west-southwest at 18-22 mph.
Short-term:
Beautiful sunshine will return to the area on Thursday. We will continue to see breezy conditions, with wind gusts up to 40-45 mph possible in some locations. This will likely result in dust blowing in some areas. Aside from the dust, we'll see sunny skies across the region, with temperatures rising into the upper 50s in western areas. Eastern locations off Caprock will peak in the upper 60s to low 70s. Thursday night into Friday morning will be cold, with lows falling into the low 30s to low 40s.
Clouds will return to the KLBK viewing area on Friday, leaving us with partly cloudy skies. Highs will peak in the 50s and upper 60s across eastern New Mexico and western Texas. Cold temperatures will remain out west. It will still be breezy, with sustained wind speeds of 15-20 mph. Friday night into Saturday morning will be closer to average in terms of temperatures, with lows in the upper 20s to upper 30s.
Our downward temperature trend will be observed a bit more on Saturday, with daytime temperatures only reaching the 50s to mid 60s. Skies will be partly cloudy across the forecast area, with west-southwesterly winds between 12 and 18 mph. Late Saturday afternoon, isolated rain will begin to develop over the western third of the KLBK viewing area. This activity will continue until the night hours. As the rain continues, temperatures will continue to drop. By sunrise on Sunday, we will see temperatures below freezing along and north of the Interstate 62/82 corridor. Light snow is expected here. Temperatures will cool into the mid 20s to mid 30s, with up to 1 inch of snow accumulation occurring north of Interstate 70.
Expanded forecast:
Super Bowl Sunday still has the potential to be snowy across the KLBK viewing area. There are many details that still need some fine-tuning. Available moisture and storm track are the largest uncertainties at this time. Models are not in agreement on the exact path of this storm system. How far north or south this system tracks will determine who sees snow and who sees rain. Temperatures will depend greatly on the path of this system. The path of the storm will also affect how much moisture we will have to deal with. For now, we are calling for areas along and north of Interstate 62/82 to stand a chance of seeing some accumulating snowfall. Yes, that includes Lubbock. Areas along and north of Interstate 70 will almost certainly see snow accumulation. How much snow we can see is still unknown at the moment due to the previously mentioned uncertainties. The rain will end Sunday night, with temperatures dropping into the teens and twenties. We will likely have to contend with icy roads during our Monday morning commute across much of the region. Depending on the amount of accumulating snow, temperatures will fluctuate significantly on Monday. Highs will slowly return to the 50s and 60s by Tuesday and Wednesday.
