A man was killed and two others were injured due to the chatter of hyenas in Kenya.
The attack occurred near the Multimedia University Kenya On the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi, on Monday evening.
The university is located near the western border of Nairobi National Park – home to several species of carnivores including hyenas, lions and leopards.
“Unfortunately, a team discovered partial human remains at the scene, which were recovered by Kenyan police,” the Kenya Wildlife Service said in a statement.
Anthony Pasha has been named as the man who died in the attack. His relatives said he was killed while collecting firewood.
“The hyena came and attacked him and chased him out of the forest,” said Kaji Lesian, the victim’s cousin.
One of the injured, 21-year-old engineering student Kevin Mwendwa, lost his thumb in the attack.
The hyena was buried after the attack, and its body is being examined to determine whether it was infected with rabies or other diseases, KWS said.
Rabies can make infected animals more aggressive and prone to biting.

Hyena attacks have become increasingly frequent on the outskirts of Nairobi, prompting KWS to issue guidelines on how to react when encountering the animals.
“If you encounter a hyena, do not move away until it does so, and continue to face its direction. Be loud, look aggressive, and appear intimidating to deter the hyena,” KWS advises.

The guidelines were issued in January, after 10-year-old Dennis Tia was attacked and killed in a field in Kiambu County, north of Nairobi.
The latest attack prompted students to protest what they described as a lack of security.
One of the students, Ochieng Kivah, said: “The university is not safe because we are close to the national park.”
“Maybe the government should put some restrictions on the movement of animals.”
