King Charles' cancer diagnosis sparks reactions across Britain

LONDON – Just over a year after burying one of its kings, the United Kingdom is now facing news that its son and successor, King Charles III, has been diagnosed with cancer, sparking an outpouring of well wishes and concern.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Charles' cancer was in its early stages and he was “shocked and saddened” when he was told of the diagnosis.

“Fortunately, this was caught early,” Sunak told the BBC on Tuesday, adding that he hoped the king would get “the treatment he needs and make a full recovery.”

King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer, which led to him postponing public duties

Sunak said he was in “regular contact” with the king. Asked whether his weekly in-person meetings would continue – the king usually meets the prime minister on Wednesday – Sunak said: “We don't need to go into detail, but I am in regular contact with him, as I always have been.” I be.”

His statements come a day after Buckingham Palace announced that Charles (75 years old) had been diagnosed with cancer, although he did not mention the type.

While Charles has been more open about his health issues than his mother, Queen Elizabeth II – whose death certificate simply said she died of “old age” – there is still a lot left unsaid. This raises speculation about the severity of his condition and whether members of the royal family may step in to take over the tasks he is no longer able to carry out.

Charles told his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, about his diagnosis before the palace made the announcement on Monday evening.

British media reports said that Harry is expected to return to Britain later on Tuesday. It is unclear where he will reside. He returned the keys to Frogmore Cottage in January 2023, shortly after publishing his memoir Spare.

What we know so far about King Charles' cancer diagnosis

Royal watchers had expected that William, the heir to the throne, may have to step up his royal duties if Charles is unable to fully resume them for some time. Charles is expected to continue receiving “red boxes” containing documents from the government that the King must review, and to meet the Prime Minister at his weekly meeting.

Well wishes have poured in from all over the world. “Diagnosing, treating, and surviving cancer requires absolute hope and courage,” President Biden tweeted.

“Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying for His Majesty’s speedy and full recovery.”

Donald Trump, the front-runner for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in 2024, commented on his “Truth Social” platform, saying that Charles was “a wonderful man. I got to know him well during my presidency, and we are all praying for his speedy and full recovery.” !
