In this episode of the @HPCpodcast, we discuss the state of quantum information science with special guest Dr. Travis Hempel, a world authority on the subject.
Director of the Center for Quantum Science, a DOE-funded partnership made up of leading academic institutions, laboratories, and national companies, Dr. Humble is also a distinguished scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and director of the laboratory's Quantum Computing Institute.
Dr. Hempel is Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Quantum Computing, Associate Editor for Quantum Information Processing, and Co-Chair of the IEEE Quantum Initiative. He also holds a joint faculty appointment with the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education at the University of Tennessee.
In this talk, Dr. Hempel discusses how quantum computing works, how far the technology is progressing toward commercial viability, how to sort through the different quantum methods under development, quantum's relationship with artificial intelligence, the key quantum technical challenges that need to be overcome and how and where quantum is likely to be implemented. .
