    An Aberdeenshire grandfather who was facing jail in Dubai after a row over a wild New Year's Eve party has been allowed to leave the country.

    Ian McKellar, 75, was visiting his daughter and granddaughter when he found himself arrested after complaining to his neighbors about a New Year's Eve fight.

    Mr McKellar was charged with trespassing and verbal assault, and was banned from leaving the UAE.

    He was spared a prison sentence and was instead fined £650.

    Detainees in Dubai, which supports people caught up in legal cases in the UAE, said Mr McKellar was “feeling completely relieved” and had already booked his flight back to Dubai. Glasgow.

    McKellar's wife, Carol, was said to be thankful that “the nightmare was over”.

    Ms Stirling added: “She can't wait to see him and is particularly happy that he has not been banned from returning to Dubai to visit his daughter in the future.”

    The couple was visiting their daughter while she settled into a new job.

    Mr McKellar was said to have asked the neighbors to turn down their music, which resulted in the conversation becoming “aggressive” and the host is said to have thrown a drink at one stage.

    Ms Stirling said: “Ian was very nervous. He had no idea what was happening.

    “He was brought before the judge without his lawyer and was made to plead guilty to the charges against him.

    “Ian did so and was then kept in a locked room alone, wondering if he would be taken to prison.

    “He was finally handed the comforting news that he will be fined 3,000 dirhams (£650) and the travel ban will be lifted.”

    He “won't survive” in prison

    Following the incident, Ms McKellar was able to return to her home in Newtonhill and sought help from the safe zone Scotland.

    Speaking to Sky News last weekMrs McKellar said her husband's mind was “running down dark alleys” due to stress and she was worried she would never see him again.

    She added that he “certainly will not survive” the prison sentence due to his poor health.

    Ms McKellar added: “This has truly been the most horrific experience we have ever had.”

    A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “We provided consular assistance to a British man in Dubai.”

    The Dubai Government Media Office was contacted for comment.
