Who are today's fishermen? Over the past three months, a team of national researchers led by Tetra Tech and its partners, a consortium appointed by the European Commission, has been consulting fishermen in all 22 EU coastal member states to determine who they are, how they live, and what drives them. This research is part of the Authority's (General Directorate of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) foresight project on “Fishermen of the Future”, which was launched in October 2023.
The results of this first phase have now been compiled into 12 distinct profiles, which aim to summarize the characteristics found in hunters today – starting with Faithful hunter With strong generational ties, to Adaptive hunter Which combines part-time fishing with other income-generating activities such as fishing or fishing tourism Roving crew A fisherman who is contracted as crew on EU medium, large or long-distance water fleets.
The profiles will be available for download on EUSurvey, and we will invite you to provide feedback that will be used to improve and enhance the profiles and introduce the study to anglers.
