We hear you like pilsner? This recipe comes from brewery founder Matt Smith at Wandering Soul in Beverly, Massachusetts. Wandering Soul has built a strong following for delicious New England-style beers like Melody Maker hazy Pale and Dark Clouds Must Pass Triple IPA — but when asked what kind of beer he'd like to share with fellow brewers, he chose the Czech-inspired Pils, Future Life. Naturally.
While its beers are highly regarded, Wandering Soul is also known for its unusual origin story, and for Smith's tireless efforts to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and the impact of grief. He started Wandering Soul as part of his journey to recover from the stillborn death of his first child, Melody – after whom Melody Maker was named. Not long after, he brewed a hazy double IPA, titled Things We Don't Say, to draw attention to the stigma surrounding discussing the trauma of loss. This beer has inspired an ongoing open source collaboration to raise money and awareness for mental health issues.
Recently, Smith, who has been suffering from a case of burnout, announced plans to postpone Wandering Soul in late 2022. “It's definitely not been discussed openly enough,” he told Kate Burnout in her article on burnout in the industry. Participants. “The alcohol industry, the beer industry, they can swallow you whole and spit you out,” he says. “That's what happened to me.”
However, he chose to revive the company in May 2023. “I was able to separate myself from it, and once I did, I realized how much I missed it, and the healing that happened at Wandering Soul,” he says. It wasn't happening anywhere else. I really needed this energy.
