Samsung Electronics has made an internal shake-up by opening a Future Technologies Office to discover “non-existent” technologies and products.
The move is seen as implanting Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee's philosophy of “technology management” into the organization.
The company's Device Experience (DX) division in charge of finished products on the same day launched the office under the direct control of division head and vice chairman Han Jung-hee, industry sources said on Tuesday. Vice President Kim Kang-tae, head of the technology strategy team at the company's future technology development unit Samsung Research, will oversee the office at the same time.
The office will serve as a control tower for the DX division to secure technologies and products that have not yet been discovered.
“Talent and technology have been the most important values since our founding,” Chairman Lee said at a lunch meeting with company executives in October last year. “We must invest in technologies that do not yet exist in the world.”
To this end, the company has also opened an emerging technology team under the direct control of Samsung Research and an Emerging Tech Group under the direct control of key divisions. The move seeks to focus on developing new form factors for each product by discovering future-oriented technologies from individual units and establishing a roadmap.
In addition, the video display division includes an exclusive module for promoting the commercial application of the Movable project, which combines projectors and robots.
The Home Appliances Division will prepare the AI Strategy P, which is a plan and roadmap for AI for home appliances. Samsung Research will also launch a Smart Home AI Lab within its team to research next-generation home appliances.
