Washington: A US State Department spokesman said that the United States is actively seeking to establish an independent Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel and is exploring options with partners in the region.
Matthew Miller declined to provide details about the department's internal work on the issue, but said at a press conference on Thursday (AEDT) that the efforts were a goal of US President Joe Biden's administration.
“We are actively seeking the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with real security guarantees for Israel, because we believe this is the best way to achieve lasting peace and security for Israel, the Palestinians and the region,” Miller said.
“There are a number of approaches you can take to achieve this. There are a number of sequences of events you can implement to achieve this goal. We are looking at a wide range of options and discussing them with partners in the region as well as other partners within the US government,” Miller said.
Axios It was reported earlier that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken asked the State Department to conduct a review and present political options regarding possible American and international recognition of the Palestinian state after the war in Gaza.
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron also told a group of British lawmakers that the UK government and its allies “will consider the issue of recognition of a Palestinian state, including at the United Nations,” the BBC reported on Tuesday.
Washington had linked the creation of a Palestinian state to efforts to persuade Saudi Arabia to normalize its relations with Israel – efforts that were largely frozen after the October 7 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and led to the taking of more than 250 hostage.
But talks have resumed over the past few months.
