US Senator Tom Cotton repeatedly asked Xu Ziqiu, CEO of Chinese-owned social media app TikTok, about his links to the Chinese Communist Party, although Chiu repeatedly confirmed that he is Singaporean at a hearing in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
In this one-minute exchange, Mr Cotton asked Mr Chew about his nationality, his passport and whether he was a member of the Chinese Communist Party, to which he replied: “Senator, I'm Singaporean. No.”
TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.
Mr. Chiu denies that his company participated in or received a request to share American users' data with the Chinese government.
