Unionized workers have long been an integral part of the electorate for Democrats. This was especially true in swing states.
But recently, a realignment in our politics has shifted support for unions — and blue-collar workers in general — to the Republican Party. Even in 2020, Biden barely managed a majority of union voters.
This trend appears to be accelerating as 2024 continues.

CNN: Union voters turn toward Trump
President Joe Biden received the official endorsement from the United Auto Workers (UAW) in late January.
However, CNN – of all places – recently reported that unionized workers are now turning more toward Donald Trump.
The Daily Caller reported of CNN senior analyst Harry Enten, “Enten said that while the belief has always been that the union vote goes to the Democrats, data from key swing states like Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin show that Trump is in the running.” Strong with Biden.”
“I think this might come as a bit of a surprise to some people,” Enten said. “And that's among union members in key swing states, where Joe Biden got 47%. Donald Trump by 47%. This is a clear move from what we saw in 2020. The vote to impeach Biden was plus eight. So this is a movement towards Donald Trump. Donald Trump has made gains among union members and has made gains nationally as well.
CNN's Poppy Harlow asked: “What about the trend line for unionized workers over time?”
The story continued:
“I was looking at some of the national polls out there and We are also seeing this trend line more towards Donald Trump this time. So union members are a big part of the Democratic coalition, but fewer and fewer of them vote Democratic, and why is that? What's going on here? Well, the union vote in 2020, among college graduates, Joe Biden… won the union members by 46 points. But look without a college degree. Donald Trump won this vote by six points. “A lot of times we think about unions and we think about blue-collar workers but actually there are a lot of blue-collar voters in unions and the reality is that those voters are turning away from Biden, but you look at those blue-collar workers,” Enten said. “More than that.” Very much in the Trump camp.”
A full GOP vote from a majority of union members would be a major sea change.

Bad news for Biden
Several national polls already show Trump ahead of Biden, and if the president can't rely on a historically reliable demographic for Democrats — union voters — that's not good news for him.
It's great news for Donald Trump.
