A strong weather system Wednesday puts the Bay Area on alert for strong winds and flooding concerns

The potential for downed trees and power outages could bring back some memories of last year's storms, as an “impactful” storm system is expected to hit the Bay Area Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Rainfall totals will likely not top the storm system although expected rainfall totals are closer to three inches in San Francisco and an inch and a half in San Jose and Livermore. Alternatively, winds may bring greater impacts.

Sustained winds are expected to reach at least 35 mph in the lower interior parts of the Bay Area across the South Bay, East Bay and parts of the Peninsula – with wind gusts in the 40s. These strong winds combined with rain-saturated soil cause concern about trees falling.

On the coasts and in higher areas, wind speeds can reach 60 mph with sustained winds in the 40s.

According to the National Weather Service, power outages are “possible,” as power lines could be hit by tree branches or fallen trees.

Heavy rain is expected to fall on most of the Gulf region around 10 a.m. and continue until the afternoon hours.
