Former Australian midfielder Jimmy Jeju has returned to the A-League to join Melbourne City.

Jego, 31, has spent the past eight years plying his trade in Europe for clubs in Austria (Sturm Graz and Austria Vienna), Greece (Aris), Belgium (Euppen) and in Scotland, where he was a team-mate of Australian duo Martin Boyle. and Lewis Miller in Hibernian.

However, after a year with Hibs, Jego has returned home after signing a deal to keep him at City at least until the end of next season.

“I am very excited to be joining Melbourne City for the next two seasons,” said Jego, who previously played in the A-League with Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United.

“This club has achieved great success in recent years, its professionalism and facilities are unparalleled in the country, and I want to play my part in adding more silverware to the cabinet.

“I absolutely loved my time abroad and I still feel like I have a lot to offer, and if I came home I really wanted to get involved in something, and City are the perfect club to do that.”

City were quick to pounce on the services of Jeju – who last secured a camp of 15 Australian players in March 2022 – following Moroccan midfielder Hamza Sakhi's decision this month to leave the club for personal reasons.

City's director of football, Michael Petrillo, said Jeju's “significant experience in Europe and with the Australian national team” would add “great depth” to the club's midfield.

“He is a highly skilled footballer who will strengthen our squad further as we get underway at the end of the season,” Petrillo said.

He added: “Not only will he bring a lot of experience in Australia and abroad, but he is a player that suits our style of play and one that City fans will enjoy watching over the coming seasons.”
