Washington said that those also targeted were people involved in the assassination of Iranian cybersecurity official turned critic Masoud Vardanjani and British-Iranian dissident Saeed Karimian.

Britain imposed sanctions on Iranian officials it said were involved in threats to kill journalists on British soil, and others it said were part of international criminal gangs linked to Iran.

The British Foreign Office said that the sanctions targeted seven individuals and one organization.

The Iranian officials subject to sanctions are members of Unit 840 of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which an ITV investigation in Britain said was involved in plots to assassinate television presenters from the Iran International news channel in Britain.

The sanctions come at a time of increasing tensions between Iran and the United States.

US forces have been attacked more than 150 times in Iraq, Syria and Jordan, as well as warships in the Red Sea, with Houthi fighters in Yemen firing drones and missiles at them.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin pledged on Monday, US time, that the United States would take “all necessary measures” to defend its forces after a drone attack by Iranian-backed militants that killed three US service members and injured dozens.

Sunday's attack was the first deadly attack against US forces since war broke out between Israel and Hamas in October, and represents a major escalation in tensions sweeping the Middle East.

“Let me begin with anger and sadness at the killing of three brave American soldiers in Jordan and at the other soldiers who were injured,” Austin said at the Pentagon.

Austin added at the beginning of the meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the Pentagon: “The President and I will not tolerate attacks on American forces and will take all necessary measures to defend the United States and our forces.”

The United States is trying to determine the exact reason why nearly 350 soldiers at the base in Jordan, known as Tower 22, were unable to stop the drone.

Two officials said a US drone was approaching the base at about the same time the attack drone was arriving. The attack drone was also flying low, one of the officials said, factors that may have contributed to the base's defenses not being able to hide it.
