Corrupt officials in Ukraine have been caught participating in the theft of a staggering $40 million intended for the war effort against Russia, sparking outrage and raising concerns about the integrity of the government.

The Associated Press reported that the money was intended to purchase 100,000 mortar shells to aid in Ukraine's defense against Russia.

Employees of a Ukrainian arms company have been accused of conspiring with Defense Ministry officials to embezzle funds. Five people were arrested, one of whom was arrested while trying to leave the country.

“The investigation comes at a time when Kiev is trying to crack down on corruption in an attempt to accelerate its membership in the European Union and NATO,” the report stated. Officials from both blocs have demanded wide-ranging anti-corruption reforms before Kiev can join them.

Unfortunately, the need to crack down on corruption probably should have been discussed before the United States sent Ukraine more than $100 billion in financial and arms aid.

    More corruption in Ukraine?

Journalist Glenn Greenwald points out that this is just a small example of corruption involving taxpayer money sent from the United States to the war effort in Ukraine.

“Very soon the full extent of the Ukrainian theft of American funds will be revealed,” he warned.

“Employees at a Ukrainian arms company conspired with Defense Ministry officials to embezzle nearly $40 million intended to purchase 100,000 mortar rounds for the war with Russia.”

Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) asked whether the report on corruption in Ukraine was just an isolated incident or perhaps just the “tip of the iceberg.”

An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in October that “people are stealing like there's no tomorrow,” while another said the ongoing crackdown on corruption was “too late” because “the reputational damage has been done.”

Senator Rand Paul sought impeachment for the money, but Republicans and Democrats rejected it

Greenwald reminded his followers on the social media platform To Ukraine.

“For two years, Rand Paul has repeatedly tried to tie U.S. aid to Ukraine to the existence of meaningful vetting and protection mechanisms to track the money,” he wrote. “Not only did Biden, McConnell and Schumer unite to stop this, they portrayed Paul as an apologist for the Kremlin’s actions.”

In 2022, Paul managed to temporarily delay a $40 billion military aid package to Ukraine, demanding access to an inspector general to monitor how the money was spent.

Republicans refused to support it, so the money was eventually spent.

“While I sympathize with the people of Ukraine, and applaud their fight against Putin, we cannot continue to spend money we don’t have,” Paul explained.

“It threatens our national security, and it is, frankly, a slap in the face to millions of taxpayers struggling to buy gas, groceries, and find baby formula,” he added.

News of the embezzlement of such a large sum of money not only weakened Ukraine's ability to defend itself, but also undermined the confidence of the American people.

It is vital that those who abused their power and betrayed the public's trust – from top to bottom – are held accountable for their actions.

Those arrested face up to 12 years in prison.
