US forces have long used Jordan as a staging point, and the attack occurred in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border.
About 3,000 American soldiers are usually stationed in Jordan.
Jordanian official television quoted Muhannad Al-Mubaideen, the government spokesman, insisting that the attack occurred outside the kingdom across the border in Syria. Conflicting information cannot be reconciled immediately.
Since the Israeli war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip began, US forces in Iraq and Syria have faced drone and missile attacks on their bases. The attack on Jordan represents the first targeting of American forces in Jordan during the war.
Biden, who was in Columbia, South Carolina, on Sunday, was briefed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor John Viner, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.
Syria is still in the midst of a civil war, and has long been a staging ground for Iranian-backed forces there, including the Lebanese Hezbollah militia. In Iraq, there are several Iranian-backed Shiite militias operating there as well.
Jordan, a powerful Western ally and crucial power in Jerusalem for its oversight of holy sites there, is suspected of launching air strikes in Syria to disrupt drug traffickers, including one that killed nine people earlier this month.
Western intelligence sources say that Washington has given Jordan about $1 billion to enhance border security since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, and has recently sent more military aid for this purpose.
