Scattered showers and thunderstorms will gather over the Tennessee, Ohio and Arkansas valleys on Saturday, the National Weather Service said.

The weather service said the rainfall stemmed from a series of storms over Oklahoma that merged with a storm system on the Gulf Coast. Severe flooding is a concern in southern and central Appalachia, where heavy rains are expected, as well as southwest Virginia.

Heavy rain and additional storms will head to the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Coast by Saturday night and into Sunday.

The Northeast will see some light snow and some freezing rain over parts of southern New England as the cold air continues on Sunday. The weather service said conditions should start to improve as the weekend ends.

Rain and melting snow caused some minor flooding in the Rochester, New York, area. A portion of Humphrey Road in Chili, New York is closed due to flooding.

Meanwhile, a steady stream of moisture will make its way into the Pacific Northwest this weekend.

The weather service expects 1 to 4 inches of rain or more to fall on the coastal ranges and waterfalls.

“The Pudding River is expected to reach Aurora Minor flood stage on Sunday. Other rivers such as the Tualatin River and Luciamot Rivers will see higher than normal elevations, the service said on X (formerly Twitter).
