On Thursday, January 25, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., found Peter Navarro, Donald Trump's former trade adviser, in contempt of Congress. Navarro now faces charges of evading a subpoena related to the congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Navarro disobeyed the subpoena from the now-defunct House Select Committee that was responsible for investigating the attack. After a short trial in September 2023, Navarro was found guilty of two counts by a federal jury in Washington, D.C.
As soon as the news was reported by various news agencies, social media users took to X to express their opinions and appeal to the authorities to deal with Hunter Biden next. Here's one comment from CBS News' tweet to Navarro:
Netizens are reacting to former Trump advisor Peter Navarro currently facing charges
The administration's trade strategy was mostly overseen by former Trump adviser Peter Navarro. According to CNN, he is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, January 25, on two charges stemming from his challenge of a subpoena related to his actions after the 2020 election.
Prosecutors told the judge last week that a one-month prison sentence for each of the two counts was “inadequate to explain, punish and deter the defendant's criminal offenses.” Navarro is also charged with contempt of Congress.
Peter Navarro is now wanted for six months in federal prison by federal prosecutors.
“The defendant, like the rioters at the Capitol, put politics, not country, first, and obstructed Congress’ investigation,” prosecutors said.
They also said that,
“He chose loyalty to former President Donald Trump over the rule of law.”
Once the news of Peter Navarro went viral, it created a frenzy on the Internet. Netizens took to the comments section of CBS News on X to express their opinions.
According to NBC News, after Trump's defeat, Peter Navarro helped spread misinformation regarding the 2020 election and spread other fake news.
Now, the sentence will be served at a hearing in federal court in Washington on Thursday, January 25 at 10 a.m. by US District Judge Amit Mehta. Prosecutors requested that Mehta sentence Navarro to six months in prison for each crime, concurrently, and penalize him to $200,000. Each charge carries a statutory penalty of at least one month in prison.
